I have been re-discovering the Valley of Vision prayers lately. Each time I do this, I wonder why I don’t read it every day. (Forehead smacking soon follows)
Today I read “The All Good” – I’ve re-worded it below – updated the translation a bit, hopefully this still captures the main ideas:
My God, you have helped me to see that whatever good is in honor and joy, how good rather is he who gives them and can withdraw them.
That blessedness doesn’t lie so much in receiving good from and in you, but rather in me steadfastly holding and imitating your good and character.
It is an amazing thing to see God in a creature – speaking, acting, filling, shining thru it; that nothing is good but God, and that I am near goodness when I’m near God, that to be like God is a glorious thing. That is my magnet, my attraction.
You are all my good in times of peace, my only support in days of trouble, my one sufficiency when life will end. Help me to see ho good your will is in all, even when it conflicts with my will, and teach me to be pleased with it. Grant me to feel you in trials, food, and blessings – to see that your many gifts and creatures are but your hands and fingers taking hold of me.
You are a bottomless fountain of all good, I give myself to you out of love, for all I have or own is yours anyway – all my possessions, family, church, self is yours to do with as you will – to honor yourself by me and by everything that I have.
If it is consistent with your eternal will, your gracious purposes, and your glorious goals – then give to me the blessings of your comforts. If not, please give me a heart and a will to remain steadfast in you – the All-Good.
